Eliminating Property Taxes on Georgia Homesteads
This week, the Georgia House introduced historic property tax relief for Georgia homeowners, delivering on our commitment to make life more affordable for our neighbors across the state, starting where it matters most—at home.
For most of us, our homes are our most cherished and valuable property. They are where we put down roots, build our families, and for many of us, our homes are the largest investment we will ever make in our lifetimes.
No one should ever face the loss of their home because they can’t afford to pay rent to the government, which is why we’re proud to be championing the Georgia Home Ownership and Market Equalization Act of 2026, which will enable the elimination of homestead property taxes by 2032.
This proposal also provides immediate relief to homeowners by doubling the state homestead exemption every other year until the mandate takes effect, and providing Homeowner Tax Relief Grants to Georgia families—on average, a return of $500—all while keeping other established exemptions intact, including exemptions for our state’s senior citizens.
I want to thank Chairman Shaw Blackmon and his team for their diligent work on this proposal, and we look forward to working with our friends in the Senate to deliver property tax relief to Georgia families and homeowners.

More Highlights from Legislative Week Two:
Yesterday, I welcomed Congressman Rich McCormick (GA-07) to the House Chamber. It was great catching up to discuss how we can partner with our federal leaders to keep Georgia the best place in the nation to live, work, and raise a family.
Earlier this week, I had the privilege of meeting Connor Tomlinson, who you may recognize from the Netflix series Love on the Spectrum. Connor is advocating for autism awareness by championing a special license plate that would inform law enforcement that they are interacting with an autistic individual. Keep up the great work, Connor!
The Georgia Ready Mixed Concrete Association hosted its annual advocacy day at the Capitol this week. Its members and their employees are helping build a better Georgia, and we look forward to working with them to keep our state moving in the right direction.
We’re expecting more winter weather across much of Georgia this weekend, so make sure you’re prepared to stay warm and safe. You can find information about how to best prepare yourself and your home for low temperatures at https://gema.georgia.gov/winter.
As the members of the House continue our work this session, we welcome your input on the issues, policies, and ideas that matter most to you. I hope to hear from you soon.
My best,
Speaker Jon Burns
